The annual Hemis Tseschu is one of the most famous monastic festivals of Ladakh, which annually takes place in the peak summer. This monastic festival is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Guru Padamasambhava, the founder of Tantric Buddhism in Tibet. The two-day festival is marked by prayers, mask wearing performances and the display of centuries old thangka,(religious scroll painting) which is one of the treasures housed at Hemis monastery. Throughout the festival, traditional monastic mask dances are performed by the monks. Every 12 year, the Gompa’s greatest treasure, a huge Thangka- painted or embroidered on silk is ritually exhibited. The next unveiling is due to take place in 2016.

Phyang monastery is one of the largests monasteries of DigungKagyudpa school of Tibetan Buddhism in Ladakh, which celebrate two day mask dance festivals annually. During the festivals, a huge thangka of SkyobaGikstenGonbo is displayed to the public in the courtyard ofthe monastery. Monastery is picturesquely located in the middle of village.

Dakthok (rock roofed cave) monastery also celebrates two day mask dance festivals to commemorating the great deeds of Guru Padamasambhava, the Tantric Master. There is cave inside the monastery where Guru Padamasambhava is said to havemeditated for a month in the 8th century during his arduous journey to Tibet.

Korzok Monastery of “Changthang Nomadic Highland” is located on the bank of Tsomorri Lake to the west direction of Tsomoriri Lake. The Monastery celebrates two day scared mask dance festival in summer season commemorating the victory of good over evil. This two-day festival ends with the dismemberment and dispersal of the 'Storma' (sacrificial cake) by the leader of the Black Hat dancers in a ceremony called 'Argham'. This symbolizes the destruction of all forms of evil and also re-enacts the assassination of the Tibetan apostate King Lang-dar-ma, by a Buddhist monk in the mid 9th century. The masks worn by the dancers represent the guardian divinities (Dharmapalas) of the Buddhist pantheon and the patron divinities of the Geluk-pa order.

Matho Nagrang is celebrating in the winter season on the 15th day of the 1st month of Tibetan calendar. The Matho Nagrang (festival) is famous for the appearance of the two oracles. These two oracles appear in the courtyard accompanying mask dancers. Besides performing stunning feats by running along the parapet of monastery, they also give prediction of future events. People from far off villages also come to seek their advice and prediction regarding their future.
